For years, attempts have been made around the world to develop a lightweight, weatherproof and accurate device that allows doctors, paramedics and mountain rescue teams to reliably measure core temperature. Difficult and sometimes even dramatic choices deciding on human life are made based on this parameter. Yet, the number of medical rescue teams that are equipped with such devices is alarmingly low. What we have created is a modern system, one of the first in the world, for treating patients in the deepest stages of hypothermia. Its weakest link, however, is as yet the most important one- the initial diagnostic stage, for which we do not have the right tools. With the HOPETHERM thermometer, we have the chance to make a real breakthrough in the diagnosis and treatment of hypothermia.

A dangerous drop in body, or hypothermia, refers to a reduction in the temperature of the internal organs of the body below 35 degrees Celsius. The brain becomes gradually less active - the person becomes lethargic, eventually losing consciousness. Breathing becomes slower and shallower. Initially, the kidneys function at high intensity - urine production increases and involuntary urination may occur. Blood clotting deteriorates - if the casualty has suffered trauma, it becomes harder to stop the bleeding. Cardiac contraction becomes slower and weaker - the heart rate may be irregular and difficult to palpate. Eventually the heart stops and the person dies. With hypothermia, the first action is to stop further heat loss. The casualty needs to be placed in a dry place and should be covered. Placing heat sources - e.g. thermophores, chemical heating packs, etc. - on a hypothermia casualty is ineffective and may be dangerous. A maximum of two small heat sources can be placed, but only on the torso and never directly on the skin. Conscious hypothermia casualties may be given warm and sweetened fluids to drink, as long as they are able to swallow properly without choking. Providing alcohol is deadly and prohibited. The casualty, even if secured, must not be left unattended. They must be assessed regularly, kept active and mentally supported.
